[ Moonlight ]
Moonlight is a three part coming of age story about a young boy coming to terms with his sexuality, emotional abuse he he’s suffered at the hands of others, and the fact that his mother is a drug addict. He struggles to cope with his sexual identity in each phase of his life and looks to his mentor, Juan, and Juan’s girlfriends, Teresa, for guidance as his mother struggles with her addiction. He also builds a bond with a young boy he goes to school with named Kevin. As we see Chiron grow up, he maintains a quiet, shyness we grew to knew in the beginning of the film, while going through physical and environmental changes. Ultimately, we see Chiron, now called Black, reconnecting and finding solace in Kevin, as he finds peace within himself.
Objective
Illustrate a film of choice using only the text from the movie script. The typographical study should convey the emotions and overall feel of the film.
[ little ]
The first segment is the story of 'little'. His dialogue is shown is smaller type with a purple hue to emphasize how small little feels and how 'little' dialogue he has in this stage of his life. The goal for the three books was to tell the story in three clearly segmented, but unified parts while highlighting the strong dialogue and fluidity of the plot. There are a lot of moments of prolonged silence and in 'little's book we see it the most.
The spacing of the text was crucial in highlighting the confusing moments in 'little's life at this point in time.
[ Chiron ]
The second segment is the story of 'Chiron'. His dialogue is shown in a normal type size with a blue-ish hue to emphasize 'Chiron' coming into himself and how he has gained somewhat of a voice in this stage of his life. The goal for the three books was to tell the story in three clearly segmented, but unified parts while highlighting the strong dialogue and fluidity of the plot. There is a lot of action featured in this portion of the book that is shown by the overlapping of text. The clustering of text is contrasted with moments of clear, spaced out dialogue and is important in highlighting the contrast in dialogue between characters.
[ BLACK ]
The final segment is the story of 'BLACK'. His dialogue is shown in a bigger, slightly bolder type with a dark blue hue to emphasize 'BLACK's battle with his sexuality and overcompensating with masculinity in this stage of his life. The goal for the three books was to tell the story in three clearly segmented, but unified parts while highlighting the strong dialogue and fluidity of the plot. There is a lot of dialogue between 'BLACK' and the character Kevin that involves a lot of body interactions and phone conversation. The proximity of the conversation is shown through the positions of the text coming closer and further apart in some of the textual compositions. The main goal is to evoke empathy from a universal audience.
